The Pap smear continues to be the most effective test in the prevention of cervical cancer.
Currently, according to the new guidelines for primary and secondary prevention of cervical cancer in 2022, it is known that around 4,500 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in Argentina each year, making it the third most prevalent cancer in women. Cervical screening has shown to decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with this condition.
Infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, and while it is a necessary factor, it is not sufficient for the development of the disease. The prevalence of this infection in the general population ranges from 5% to 25%.
The American Cancer Society recommends that every sexually active woman should have an annual Pap smear and a gynecological examination.
